Manufacturing Engineer

We are seeking a Manufacturing Engineer to join our Engineering team at our site in Portland, Dorset, and support engineering projects involving the structural and acoustic design and productionisation of composite structures. Projects are typically for Marine Defence applications working directly with OEMs or 1st tier suppliers to OEMs, and designs are productionised and manufactured in our on-site factory.

This role will have a particular emphasis on chemistry knowledge and we are ideally seeking someone with a strong grounding in polymer science and the ability to design new polymer products (i.e. come up with formulations) as well as fulfil the day to day manufacturing engineering function.

Tods Defence is part of the Unitech Group and we specialise in the design and manufacture of acoustic and radar solutions for submarines and surface ships, developing and producing a wide range of materials and applied treatments. Our PU coated composite sonar domes and acoustic windows protect the performance of vital sonar and communication equipment and are in service with over 20 of the world's navies.

This role works closely with the Design, Production and Quality teams in particular to apply expertise and knowledge to develop, implement, and maintain processes in the manufacture, assembly and inspection of composite structures and components. Strong communications within the Engineering team and cross-functionally is essential to ensure a realisable design.

There may be a requirement to travel to and work at customer sites across the UK from time to time.

The role

Typical activities include to:

 - Provide Manufacturing Information Sheets, route cards, bill of materials and manufacturing specification data in accordance with company standards.

 - Develop the most cost effective and efficient solutions that satisfy design to cost and design for manufacture best practice.

 - Specify material requirements, define suitable methods of manufacture and identify and implement tooling and equipment.

 - Create test specifications and manufacture of composite and polymer test samples.

 - Develop processes to a production steady state standard that meets specification and design intent.

 - Support design and customer reviews and other meetings as required.

 - Support Production and Quality Assurance in resolving production problems and non-conformances.

 - Utilise Lean Principles to improve the product, process flow, build cycle and waste reduction.

 - Train employees on process, applications, and manufacturing specification data.

The person

You will have:

 - Relevant engineering/manufacturing/chemistry qualification and/or equivalent experience

 - Specific experience of composite & polymer materials and materials/component processing

 - Computer literate, windows based and 3D model-based definition (CATIA v5 preferred)

 - Ability to develop successful working relationships, work on own initiative and as part of a team

 - Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate at all levels

 - Strong problem-solving ability applied through a practical approach

 - Continuous Improvement, zero defect and customer focused mind-set

 - A strong team focus with a flexible attitude to work load
