Quality Director

Tods Defence is a specialist manufacturer of advanced composite structures for the marine defence industry.  Based in Portland, Dorset, we have been producing sonar domes, acoustic windows and coatings, and other complex structures for over 60 years.

We are seeking a Quality Director with a good practical understanding of marine defence manufacturing and a hands-on approach to join our senior leadership team. This is a great opportunity to make a real difference in an SME with immediate growth opportunities. 

Reporting to the Managing Director, the key purpose of the role is to lead the Quality function (Assurance and Inspection) to ensure processes, procedures and products meet ISO9001 and AS9100, ISO14001, OHSAS18001, and customer requirements.

The role

This is a broad role encompassing the following areas of responsibility:

 - Manage (and carry out) the work, performance and capability of the Quality team to meet Company and Customer Quality requirements

 - Ownership, maintenance and continuous improvement of the Integrated Management System and Business Continuity Management System

 - Quality-related metrics and reporting

 - Coordinate and carry out the Internal Audit Programme; support the completion of actions arising

 - Support Regulatory Body and Customer audits; support the completion of actions arising

 - Management of customer and internal NCRs

 - New Product quality requirements and planning including customer acceptance criteria

 - Support Business Development and bid compliance

 - Support customer/prospective customer presentations and visits

 - Support the review, development and management of the Company risk register

 - Work proactively as part of the senior management team and contribute to the overall performance and well-being of the Company; provide cross-functional support as required

 - Motivate, train and mentor to continually develop Quality capability across the business

The person

 - Significant Marine Defence and/or Aerospace Manufacturing experience, preferably to include composite products

 - Demonstrable experience with the ISO9001 or EN AS9100 Quality Management System and proven Quality improvement projects using industry standard tools and techniques

 - Recognised qualifications in Quality Management Systems to include Lead Auditor

 - Proven strategic and performance leadership capability; able to initiate and lead change; delivers tangible results; demonstrates toughness under pressure and a competitive spirit

 - The ability to apply strategic/big picture focus to the practical operation of the business, and define business objectives and priorities

 - Computer literate, Windows based with data compilation and analysis competency

 - A strong team leader; delegates, coaches and mentors within the team

 - Practical and positive with a flexible and conscientious “get it done” approach to work load; acts as a role model to others

 - Communicates with impact and clarity; assertive and influential; builds effective and supportive working and business relationships
